Cobot Palletizer Rental: A Practical Guide to Renting a Collaborative Palletizing Robot

Buying a palletizer used to be the only way to stop stacking cases by hand — a capital purchase, an integration project and a fenced corner of your plant, decided before the first pallet was ever stacked. Cobot palletizer rental changes the order: a collaborative robot palletizer is installed on your line, proven on your real cases, and paid for monthly. This guide covers what the rental actually includes, where a cobot palletizer's advantages come from, and how to check whether one fits your line.

What cobot palletizer rental is

A cobot is a collaborative robot — a robot arm designed to work safely alongside people rather than behind fencing. A cobot palletizer rental is a complete palletizing cell built around that arm — robot, gripper, conveyor tie-in and pallet stations — supplied on a monthly rental instead of sold. You may also see the same idea described as a palletizing robot rental; the difference that matters is the collaborative design, because it decides how much floor space, fencing and installation work the cell needs.

Dorna Automation Solutions rents its cobot palletizing cell for $1,999/month with $0 upfront, with installation, start-up, operator training and maintenance included. The program details are on our palletizer rental page; this guide is about deciding whether it fits.

The advantages of a cobot palletizer

1. Safety: built to work alongside your operators

The first advantage is safety. A traditional industrial palletizer is fast and powerful enough that it has to be fenced off — a whole cell sealed away from people, with the floor space and guarding that implies. A cobot palletizer takes the opposite approach: the collaborative robot is designed to share a workspace with operators, who keep feeding cartons, staging pallets and watching quality around the cell while it does the lifting and stacking. There is no whole cell to fence off. And when a plant's own risk assessment or rules call for more, safety guides or a cage are available as options, fitted to the site — our guide Are Cobot Palletizers Safe? walks through how that assessment works.

2. Flexibility: a recipe for every product

Pallet patterns are programmed and stored as recipes — one for each case size and product you run. When the product changes, the operator selects the matching recipe instead of re-teaching the machine, so changeover between case sizes is fast. A new case size later means a new recipe, not new equipment. For plants that run several formats across a week, that flexibility is the difference between automation that follows production and automation production has to work around.

3. Small footprint: about 3,000 × 3,000 mm

End-of-line floor space is usually the scarcest space in the plant. A typical cobot palletizer cell is about 3,000 × 3,000 mm, with two pallet stations of 1,100 × 1,100 mm and the conveyor infeed between them — roughly the space a hand-stacking station already occupies. A conventional palletizer's fenced footprint, plus its clearance, often simply does not fit the buildings small and mid-size manufacturers actually run in. If a person can stand at your line end and stack cases, the cell can very likely work there.

4. Fast installation and setup — about a day

Because the cell ties into your existing conveyor and needs no fenced enclosure built around it, installation is positioning and connecting, not construction. Installation, start-up and recipe creation take about a day on site, and operator training is part of it — your team learns start, stop, pallet changeover and recipe switching on your real cases. Delivery to your site typically takes 3–4 weeks before that day. The full sequence is in Palletizer Installation: What to Expect.

5. Rental economics: $1,999/month instead of a capital purchase

A conventional palletizer is a capital decision: the purchase price, the integration, and a fixed footprint committed to one spot on your floor. The rental model replaces that with $1,999/month, zero upfront, and maintenance included — the cell is installed and proven on your line as part of the rental, and the ongoing cost is an operating expense you can plan around. The side-by-side numbers are in Palletizer Rent vs Buy and How Much Does a Robotic Palletizer Cost?

What a cobot palletizer handles

The rental cell handles cases up to 20 kg (44 lb), with a robot reach of up to 1,880 mm covering the pallet positions on either side of the conveyor. Pallet patterns are taught per case format, so a 12-pack and a 24-pack each run their own stored recipe. Speed is a sizing question, not a headline number: what matters is your sustained cases per minute — the rate the cell must hold all shift — rather than a short peak. Our breakdown of realistic rates is in How Many Cases Per Minute Can a Cobot Palletizer Handle?

The fit check: five numbers and three site items

Before any rental is confirmed, five numbers decide the fit:

On site, the cell needs about 3,000 × 3,000 mm of floor, a 110 V supply (maximum 15 A) and a compressed-air connection at the line end. The sizing method behind these numbers is covered in Pallet Patterns and Case Sizing.

Honest limits

A cobot palletizer is not the answer to every palletizing problem, and a good rental conversation says so up front. Cases heavier than 20 kg (44 lb) are outside this cell's range. A single fixed cobot picks from the conveyor and places to pallet positions on its left and right — it cannot directly serve four pallet positions; that takes a linear rail or a second robot, which is a layout decision to make on paper, not on installation day. And if your sustained rate is far beyond what a collaborative arm cycles at, a traditional palletizer may be the right tool — the honest comparison is in Cobot vs Traditional Palletizer.

The bottom line

Cobot palletizer rental works when the fit is right: cases up to 20 kg, a sustained rate a collaborative arm can hold, and about nine square metres at the end of the line. In return you get the cobot's core advantages — a cell designed to work safely alongside your operators without fencing off a whole area, recipes that make changeovers fast, installation in about a day, and a fixed $1,999/month with maintenance included instead of a capital purchase. Check the five numbers first; the rest follows from them.
